Shot on 35mm Ilford XP2 Super film on top of the parking garage at Southgate Centre in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, this photograph was taken during a January cold spell. With the windchill, the temperature hovered around -30°C. In this extreme winter chill, steam from the shopping mall's heating systems billowed upward in luminous clouds. As sunlight illuminated the vapour, I was reminded of the smoke-filled atmosphere of Claude Monet’s Gare Saint-Lazare paintings. That inspired me to press the shutter button on my Nikon FM2 with nearly frozen fingers. When I scanned the negative, I was fascinated by the way the steam shrouded the structure on the parking garage.
