Ancient Light – Matins

‘Ancient Light – Matins’ is painted on an oval canvas, linen stretched over an MDF panel, ready to hang.
There is something about a train platform in the early hours, before the world has caught up with itself. I wanted that feeling: the melancholy of a time gone by, and at the same time the excitement of a world still undiscovered. A moment in life when everything lies ahead, and everything is still possible.
The iron lantern, the waiting train, that particular blue before sunrise.. it could be the early 1900s, a small provincial station somewhere in France. The craquelé surface carries that sense of pastness, of a certain époque. But the feeling is not nostalgic. It is more like a longing -for freshness, for the open road, for that version of yourself that hasn't yet decided anything.
