Ancient Light – Citadel

‘Ancient Light – Citadel’ is painted on an oval canvas, linen stretched over an MDF panel, ready to hang.

The outlines of an ancient citadel against the nightfall sky, at that moment when daylight gives way and windows begin to glow. To me, it's fascinating how humans have always pushed back the dark with whatever fire they could carry: torches, candles, lanterns. Some things never change.
I think this is where I started working more impressionistically, reaching for a feeling rather than a place. The visible brushstrokes on the smooth surface give this place the feeling of somewhere remembered rather than imagined. The lights above are barely distinguishable from the lights below, as if the shimmering town and the crackled sky are answering each other.
