Through this painting, I wanted to depict memories, portraits and glimpses of Turkish soldiers who fought in Gallipoli. These figures are important as they fought for their country in sheer determination protecting the present and future generations of their people. I, myself, am a descendant of that brave nation and I am also proud to say that I’m a citizen of a wonderful country, Australia. It saddens me to know that Australia and Turkiye`s paths first ever met through the unfortunate World War 1. Yet, to know we have all learned that war is never the solution, and that we will always strive to keep the peace, comforts me. I commemorate all the veterans and martyrs of Gallipoli with respect and gratitude.
In a contemporary manner, I chose a soft palette of yellow and white tones to create a reflective and contemplative atmosphere. While the work engages with the subject of war, it approaches it gently as if revisiting memories or walking through a museum, observing traces of the past with quiet distance. Through soft tonalities and storytelling, the work invites viewers to reflect on memory, history, and the layered experience of looking back.
