What Lies Beneath

Inspired by an artist residency in Naples, Italy, and its layered architecture, my thread drawing explore themes of memory, belonging and space. As I explored the city during my daily walks, I found myself drawn into a mental journey. Influenced by Escher's illusions, urban photography and city maps, the drawings are layered over each other, creating ethereal, non-specific cityscapes that play with familiarity, color, scale, and repetition. Hand-embroidered onto washi, a Japanese paper, the material softens with each stitch, becoming supple like the textiles I usually work with. The process offered a quiet respite amidst the city’s chaos while fuelling my imagination.
