This artwork portrays one of the many stages of observation of my journey of self-introspection & self-reflection. It is a work created while trying to be consciously aware of each moment. During the experiment of maintaining awareness I witnessed myself evoIving in many ways. There was a shift in my perception, emotions and energy. It felt intense but it was setting me free - from preconceived notions, ideas & free from layers of resistance. It was uncomfortable yet enormously empowering. To portray something so layered and personal, fabric felt like the most apt & intimate medium to me, it being very hands on. I was in direct contact with the material throughout the process & it was fascinating to touch & witness the changes in texture. Just like me the fabrics went through a serious transition the get to the end result. I was a witness to the fabric going through the process of being stretched, boiled, heated & ripped. Changing form & unlearning- just like me. The fibers were shocked in many ways & I began to see a visual representation of “metamorphosis” unravelling before me.
The choice of fabrics & the colors of fibers used was a conscious choice. I have used contrasting fabrics & opposing colors to portray growth. The transition from the visually dark, heavy and saturated fibers like wool to the breathable, light and sheer fabric of organza; is my story to be told. The color palette reflects the shift in energy. The white muslin fabric of the background, in its purity, is witnessing the transition (like my mind- when conscious) & its raw surface suggests infinite possibilities. The blank background is a witness, giving the forms “space” to transition and evolve.
