Many artists face the constant challenge of finding exhibition spaces for their artwork outside traditional galleries. Due to strict fire safety regulations (DIN 4102-1 | EN 13501-1), it is no longer possible to exhibit artwork in public buildings across the EU. For example, it is forbidden to hang students' work in school corridors.
I became aware of this problem after a planned exhibition at a large hospital fell through due to fire safety regulations. Over the past five years, I have consequently developed a canvas that does not burn and does not warp.
With my invention, artists can once again exhibit their paintings in all public buildings, despite the fire safety standards. At its core, this product represents an innovation that builds on the traditional canvas to meet current safety standards. Currently, there are no comparable products available that share this concept. A patent has been filed.
Looking to the future, this concept offers a unique opportunity to deliberately burn or char the canvas in various ways. By exposing the frame to fire, entirely new, transformative and individual works of art are created. A contrast between destruction and fire resistance.
By subjecting the canvas to fire – contrary to its inherent fire-resistant properties – a simple canvas is transformed into a work of art in its own right. The plan is to create a series of unique pieces by charring the canvas, each distinguished by its own distinct burn marks.
