‘why did you let me fall’

Inspired by an encounter with Lady Diana, who I met while serving as a police officer in Chelsea, London, this painting brings together that personal memory of her grace and her humanity with symbolic sacred iconography. 

I have portrayed the well-known look of Diana wearing the distinctive red jumper to highlight the design’s single black sheep as a metaphor for the isolation she likely identified with.

She first wore this in June 1981 to a polo match shortly after her engagement to Prince Charles, before it became a historic artefact and her most expensive garment sold at Sotheby's.

Diana’s figurative stance that mirrors Christ also serves as a commentary on her personal sacrifice she endured under the pressures of the establishment.
