Bayonet Peak is a favourite mountain on Lake Wakatipu, Queenstown Lakes, Southern New Zealand. When going down to Lake Wakatipu the mountain always commands a greeting. This painting was painted alla prima one afternoon, not noticing until much later that I had unconsciously painted a face on the mountain! The mountain resides in a fortunate corner of the lake separated from humankinds' propensity for overdevelopment of the landscape. It looks very happy about this fact, sunning itself, open faced toward the north sun.
