Clown Offstage – Homage to Federico Fellini is a defigurative work, an erasure against every cliché. From a dark background of greys and browns, the face of a clown emerges, barely discernible, framed by a dishevelled yellowish wig, with traces of pink and red makeup dissolving away. The pictorial matter is dense and layered, made of glazes, scratches and drippings that work by subtraction, erasing rather than defining. At the centre of the chest, an orange bow tie with a luminous point stands out as the focal point of the work. Yellow buttons suggest a worn-out circus costume. Diagonal yellow lines cut across the composition like flashes, evoking the chaotic energy of the big top. The atmosphere is deeply Felliniesque: the clown is caught offstage, in the private moment when the makeup dissolves and only human fragility remains behind the mask — a figure fading away, a memory being erased, a poetic homage to the circus as a metaphor for life and nostalgia.
