Ode to Hieratic was a written language, an abstract or simplified version of hieroglyphics in Egypt. I have painted the white letters of Hieratic over the Alizarin Crimson/Purple color field, representing royalty. I painted another area in Turquoise because this color is found in Egyptian jewelry. In the middle are words abstracted from the Latin alphabet. The Latin alphabet, the Arabic script, and the Hellenic alphabet are dominant written languages. Pressures from dominant scripts led to the Hieratic script falling out of use. This work laments the loss of a dead language.
