Acrylic on canvas. This comes from a series of work in which the arrow is the primary subject. It becomes the main visual form of the piece and simultaneously it directs the attention of the viewer to something besides the painting itself. It uses intentional form against itself so the world and existence become the true subject. Design manipulates reality and perception. For better or worse. It is a corner assemblage of 8 canvases depicting arrows pointing up. A formal order against the present space the viewer occupies. This is countermanded by the floating vision of a downward pointing arrow formed in the center negative space. It appears to float due to gestalt effects and the minds attempt to reorder the dissolving negative arrow. This pits 2 dimensional formal design against the structure of the 3 dimensional room it is presented in. The longer blank canvases on the bottom act as a visual lever to push the wall back, dissolving the 3 dimensionality of the room.
