Scarlatti’s Zoo: Asinus

This piece is one of a series of six paintings which combine the literary trope of the pastoral with the enlightenment feature of the menagerie. They then subvert it with orientalist pavilions and mountain top settings, substituting ageing peasants for shepherds, ordinary girls for nymphs and farm animals for exotic creatures.
