“A late day’s arrival” is painted with acrylic and oil paint on a velour curtain I got from a neighbor. Painting on “unsuitable” fabrics is always hilariously unpredictable. Velour is a “thirsty” fabric, requiring several layers paint before I could later draw on it with charcoal and pastel.
The work grew intuitively from a photograph and a memory. At the same time, I was writing a text about humans constantly searching and waiting for something.
I was born in Poland during communism and the socialist planned economy - and I remember the endless queues outside nearly empty shops. People often stood in line for hours without even knowing what was being sold. You joined the queue simply to be sure you might get something. Anything. A little like life in general: you never know the outcome.
Only after finishing the painting did I realize how these childhood memories, my writing, and the painting process had unconsciously met in this work.
