A Touch of Vanity portrays vanity as a facet of self-perception rather than a performative act. The layered figures represent instances of self-aggrandization and then, vulnerability. The transparency of forms signals that a stable boundary to the self has not yet been defined. Rather than construing vanity as excess, the painting frames it as a universal human impulse. A naive negotiation between identity, desire, and the need to be seen.
