Amazonas que respira

The basin of the largest river on Earth is home to around 400 amazonian peoples. They have safeguarded the world's biggest tropical rainforest for 10,000 years. To create arable soil and sustain their populations, they cut and carbonized areas of the jungle, creating the "terra preta" (black earth) that remains on the riverbanks to this day. Communities abandoned these fertile soils close to the river fleeing colonization. The indigenous peoples of the Amazon region still continue this ancient practice through chagras: their growing spaces where edible crops, fruit trees and medicinal plants coexist along with intergenerational teachings and wisdom. The Amazon rainforest is not a "virgin jungle", it is a living organism that breathes and is enriched and sustained by the millenary work of its peoples.
