The painting Annunciation: Silesia 1945 is a contemporary reinterpretation of the Renaissance motif of the Annunciation, reimagined for the experience of Silesia in the crucial, traumatic year of 1945. Fra Angelico's inspiration here is not a formal citation, but rather a starting point for a dialogue between the sacred and history – between the purity of divine communication and the burden of human fate.
Architectural arcades, evoking the monastery loggia of Renaissance representations, are set in an austere, almost post-industrial space. The figures – Mary and the Archangel – lose their unambiguous physicality: they are rather spectres, traces of presence, figures of memory. Their gestures are restrained, as if muffled by the weight of time and history. The Annunciation here is not a moment of joyful promise, but a quiet, uncertain message that reaches a world scarred by war, displacement, and the collapse of the previous order.
