Cravings II is part of Shades of Grub, an ongoing 50-work series translating culinary experiences into abstract visual language. Inspired by the Schiacciata Tartufo from a Roman-owned Italian restaurant in Singapore, the piece explores “onomatopoeic energy”—turning sound from a bar seat by the open kitchen into sight. The crisp crackle of toasted crust and the deep, earthy resonance of truffle are expressed through layered textures and gestural marks. Working in mixed media, I approach the canvas like a kitchen, building surfaces that echo the complexity of flavour. Each stroke suggests movement, where the sizzle and hum of preparation become visible traces. The work invites the viewer to experience how seeing and hearing can merge into a sensory form of “tasting” a painting.
