Fall of the Great Red Dragon and the Woman Clothed in Sunlight

This drawing is an attempted sequel to William Blake’s ‘The Great Red Dragon and the Woman Clothed in Sunlight’. It centres the themes of a masculinity undisciplined by duty or ethics, as a lobotomised existence where the individual, despite possessing an appearance of strength and order, is incapable of anything but chaos. The effect that this has on the divine feminine is snatched out of the sky by the masculine figure, is one of tragedy where not only the feminine is robbed of safety, but the world is robbed of femininity. The drawing specifically draws from Gian Lorenzo Bernini’s The Abduction of Persephone, where victimisation by chaos and weakness is similarly disguised as masculine strength as Hades drags Persephone to the underworld, robbing the world of spring.
