Formalism
I created this piece to be visually striking, using bold, historically accurate Roman colors such as red cinnabar and Egyptian blue. Inspired by ancient fresco design, I included theatrical architecture, trompe l’oeil illusion, and stone details to reflect the wealth and taste of a noble patron. Like many Roman murals, it was conceived as an apotropaic image meant to ward off the evil eye.
Iconography
I imagined this work as a commission from a Roman aristocrat and chose the story of Orpheus and Eurydice to show culture and refinement. Artemis appears above as a symbol of artistic power, while she and Apollo represent nature and civilization in tension, echoing the theme of fragile love. Orpheus leads Eurydice from Hades, both idealized according to Roman standards rather than historically Greek ones.
