Portrait of a woman
This is a portrait of a young woman from the Fulani tribe attending the annual Gerewol
ceremony in central Niger. The Gerewol ceremony is an annual courtship ritual, whereby
potential suitors, adorned in elaborate dress and makeup, compete for the attention of young
women of marrying age through elaborate dance and musical performances. This portrait
centres on the woman’s subjectivity at the cusp of a formative moment in both her personal
and cultural life.
