Anare Somumu, a prominent contemporary artist from Lakeba Village, Saqani, Cakaudrove, Fiji, has dedicated his life to expressing the culture and natural environment of Fiji through his artistic practice. Born in 1971, Somumu currently resides and works in Suva, the capital of Fiji. His career began in 1991 as a children’s book illustrator for the Ministry of Education’s curriculum development unit. His art spans various exhibitions, both domestic and international, showcasing his deep connection to ethnic values and nature. Somumu’s art reflects his rich cultural heritage and his dedication has significantly contributed to the preservation and promotion of Fijian traditional arts. In 2023, Somumu became the first and only Pacific artist to hold prestigious title of Arirang Master.
