Italy, 1968

Ihab Bochi(Syria, 1968) is a self-taught photographer of Italian descent based in Reggio Emilia. Following a career in the fashion industry, he developed over more than a decade a distinctive visual language centered on mobile photography—a medium he deliberately embraced for its immediacy, freedom, and resistance to conventional technical constraints. His work explores the tension between the visible world and the inner emotional landscape. Through radical color interventions applied directly to smartphone images, Butchi transforms ordinary scenes—a storm-lit countryside, an urban crossroads, a harbor at dusk—into spaces that move beyond documentary realism, inhabiting a realm that is at once familiar, evocative, and deeply felt. In his practice, color is not descriptive but expressive: a means of rendering the world as it is experienced rather than merely observed. His dual Syrian and Italian heritage infuses his imagery with a heightened sensitivity to transience, impermanence, and fragility, where beauty emerges precisely because it is unstable and fleeting. In Bochi’s photographs, the sky is never entirely free of ambiguity, and light is never fully resolved. Instead, both seem suspended in a state of becoming, as though on the verge of coming alive. His images invite contemplation of the delicate boundary between reality and memory, between what is seen and what is felt.
