These two photographs were taken in Venice, as part of the series “Not sinking, Rising" investigating the
influence of the works of the Old Masters on contemporary art, and how this history has affected
the value of photography's digital expression. With the advent of digitisation does the
photographic image sustain value beyond the experience of its capture?
The work continues my interpretative response to the Old Masters, whose 500 year old skills reflect expression and
preservation, but enlists landscape elements to explore permanence within digital photography. My choice of location was informed by the desire to represent photography's tectonic shift from analogue to digital, forming new alloys and new ways of seeing. By
placing the classically familiar figure in the threatened landscape of Venice, I explore how digital disruption has altered photographic processes. It's a comment on environments of existential threat versus the potential decay of the modern digital photograph.
