This is part of the artist’s Dementia Collection, Surviving Winter is both a personal advocacy piece and an effort to raise awareness about Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. Through visual metaphor, the work explores the emotional realities faced by individuals and families affected by memory loss while challenging the notion that difficult and painful subjects cannot be expressed through beauty.

A solitary weathered tree stands against a heavily textured atmospheric landscape. Positioned as the focal point, its gnarled branches extend across the upper portion of the canvas, conveying endurance, isolation, and quiet strength. Layered acrylic and resin create depth and shifting luminosity, evoking changing skies and uncertain terrain.

The work draws on the idea that memory and perception can be as unpredictable as the weather. There are seasons of clarity, light, and recognition, as well as periods of confusion, loss, and disconnection. The lone tree becomes a symbol of perseverance through these changing conditions, remaining rooted despite the challenges of an altered inner landscape.

Through textured surfaces, reflective elements, and restrained color relationships, Surviving Winter transforms a difficult and deeply human experience into a contemplative visual narrative of resilience, dignity, and survival.
