Czarina Sheela Alcasid is a self-taught visual artist whose creative sensibility has been evident since childhood. Her artistic practice has been shaped by years of experience in video production, store design, graphic design, printing, and art conservation. She has also completed a formal art conservation program, which strengthened her understanding of material stability, preservation methods, and long-term artwork integrity. These combined experiences inform a practice grounded in both artistic expression and technical discipline.
Sheela’s works explore the space between reality and imagination. Her compositions are often emotionally charged, atmospheric, and narrative-driven, inviting viewers into scenes that feel both familiar and introspective. She is equally adept in oil and acrylic, and continuously experiments with unconventional materials and processes to expand the visual language of her work. While not limited to a single subject matter, her landscape works are noted for their depth, realism, and spatial sensitivity.
A defining characteristic of her practice is the integration of mixed-media, sculptural, and three-dimensional elements into painting. Rather than treating the canvas as a flat surface, Sheela constructs layered visual environments that emphasize texture, movement, and physical presence. These tactile qualities create a more immersive viewing experience and distinguish her work from conventional painted compositions.
Her background in conservation and fabrication also plays a critical role in her experimental approach. Despite her openness to material exploration, she remains committed to producing works that are structurally sound, durable, and archival in quality. Her experience in art conservation projects has given her a strong awareness of longevity, craftsmanship, and the importance of preserving artistic integrity over time.
Greatly influenced by one of the pillars of Modern Philippine Art, German Icarangal, Sheela continues to develop a body of work that balances imagination, technical refinement, and material innovation. Her works reflect a thoughtful engagement with form, texture, and narrative—resulting in pieces that are visually compelling, conceptually layered, and built to endure.
