MARUMADO | seiko shimo #3093253599
This work invites calm contemplation, inspired by the traditional Japanese marumado (round window), which frames a view like a living painting. Rooted in the Japanese aesthetic of wabi-sabi-an appreciation of impermanence, simplicity, and the beauty of natural aging-the piece reflects a quiet awareness of the passage of time. The work balances strength and delicacy, crafted from mortar mixed with organic washi paper fibers. Backed with Shoji-paper(Japanese washi-paper used for windows), it allows soft light and shadow to interact gently across the surface, creating subtle and ever-changing expressions. At its center is Kishu Binchotan, a highly regarded traditional Japanese charcoal, reinterpreted not as fuel but as a sculptural medium. Shaped by nature and time, each piece retains its unique form, embodying the imperfect beauty celebrated in wabi-sabi.The horizontal elements evoke drifting clouds, while the vertical form suggests a tree or mountain, creating a tranquil landscape suspended between abstraction and memory.Through the dialogue between nature and human intervention, permanence and transience, this work offers a space for reflection. It encourages viewers to pause, embrace quietness, and discover a sense of inner tranquility within the beauty of impermanence.
