The End of Love seeks to convey the emotional state when love and passion are lost and replaced by loves opposite emotion: which is indifference.
What should be solid spheres of red, as representations of pure love, are replaced by muted hues that are also dissected, segmented, ‘washed out’ and additionally pierced by antagonistic orthogonal shapes, lines and darts portraying the degradation and deterioration of what was once pure. The central monochromatic schizm, that divides those dissected shapes of muted reds and faded yellows, represents two souls divided by emotional enmity through the slow decay and loss of love, replaced by ensuing indifference and perhaps a sense of emptiness wrought by love lost.
When I first showed this completed piece to Phyllis. I had to reassure her that it wasn’t how I felt, but rather what I imagined it would feel like to lose her love - that is, my painting is an expression of the emotional wrench wrought by love lost absolutely.
