My piece ‘The Mossa’ is part of my oil-painted series titled Palio di Siena, which depicts the Palio race held in the Piazza del Campo in the city of Siena, the Tuscan region of Italy. ‘The Mossa’ captures the energetic starting line of the race, which I created through layered blocks of unblended colour, as I prefer to create form through the generalization of shapes. Palio di Siena is a bareback Medieval horse race intended to settle a rivalry amongst the Contrade or districts within the city of Siena. Despite the determined grit of the jockeys, the horse is the true star of this race; a rider-less horse may win so long as its spennacchiera (plumed headpiece) remains unscathed on its head. At each victory dinner, a seat remains vacant in honour of the contradas' prized steed. The triumphant horse is paraded around for a couple of days following his victory before returning to his owner.
