Japan, 1977
ALIMO was born in 1977 in Japan, an artist, Animation historian and scholar of comparative arts based in Japan and Estonia. He had been a theoretical and practical researcher of animation as a visiting researcher at the Estonian Academy of Arts for two years from 2012, and in 2019 he wrote ethnographic animation history and obtained a Ph.D. from the Tokyo University of the Arts.
His animated works focusing on a Fairy tales and a Play have visions of ‘Relationship between history, landscape and narrative’ based on “Animation Tableau,” the original method for creating animation. His works had shown in many Japanese and international museums and international film festivals. He also has been published scholarly articles on an animation under the real name, and his activities involve the coexistence of historiographical theory and creative practice. Therefore, the habit of viewing and listening to various materials is reflected in his film. The film study on “ The sea” that he has been conducting at the institution with a grant from Yale University in 2022 is still ongoing. These experiences as a researcher have led to an interest in intertextuality and juxtaposition in recent years.
His film "Juxtaposed LAND” (2023), worked in cooperation with the King Abdulaziz World Culture Center (Ithra), a mixture of everyday life, allegory, and philosophy, world premiered at Animafest Zagreb (2023) and won the Best Animation Award at the International Animated Film Festival in Georgia. Main art exhibitions include solo exhibition “Rhizome Sketch”(Tokyo/2022), Surrealism and Dali (Fukushima/2019), Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale, Animation on Opening Concert, Takeshi Kobayashi: Symphonic Suite "Beyondthe Circle" (Echigo Tsumari Auditorium Danjuro/2018), HIROSHIMA CODE (Hiroshima/2017), Standing on the earth, looking up into the sky (Gunma/2016), 18th DOMANI (Tokyo/2015), Tales & Fables from India & Japan (India/2015), Folkestone Triennale Fringe: UNLOCKING THE DIARY (UK/2014), The 16th Japan Media Arts Festival・Art Division (Tokyo/2013), and Moving Tableau (Saitama/2011). In addition, Pola Museum Annex, Zagreb Museum of Contemporary Art, Aomori Contemporary Art Centre residency program and ZKM. Among many prestigious film festivals, his works are screened: International Film Festival Message to Man (Russia/2024), Future Film Festival (Italia/2023), Video Art Festival miden (Greece/2014), Vancouver International Film Festival (Canada/2012), Etiuda&Anima (Poland/2012), and so on. He receives an award the 11th Taro Okamoto Award for Contemporary Art special prize. In 2012-2014, he granted from the Japanese government overseas study program for artists and the Pola Art Foundation Overseas study for young artists.
