Cynthia Zhang (b. 1992, Hubei, China) is a contemporary artist, writer, and independent researcher whose practice explores perception, becoming, consciousness, and the generative forces underlying life.
Working primarily through painting, Zhang investigates the relationship between darkness and light, emergence and dissolution, individuality and interconnectedness. Drawing inspiration from Eastern philosophy, meditation, natural phenomena, and contemporary process thought, she approaches painting not as a representation of reality but as a space in which reality continuously unfolds through perception.
Zhang is the originator of The Philosophy of ABYSS, an evolving artistic and philosophical framework that examines existence as a process of continual becoming. Within this framework, the “Abyss” is understood not as emptiness or negation, but as a generative condition from which form, perception, memory, and life emerge. Her ongoing research has led to the development of the ABYSS Manifesto, the Life Cycle Model, and a broader body of theoretical writings exploring art, consciousness, cosmology, and relational existence.
Her paintings are characterized by layered abstract compositions, atmospheric depth, and fields of chromatic emergence that invite prolonged engagement. Rather than presenting fixed meanings, the works create open perceptual environments in which viewers participate in the formation of experience.
In 2026, Zhang presented her solo exhibition Vitality and Love at Peace Hotel Shanghai. Her works have been acquired by private collectors and cultural institutions, and her research continues to develop through exhibitions, publications, and international interdisciplinary dialogue.
Zhang lives and works between Hongkong and Shenzhen.
