Bulgaria, 2017
Matilda Finzi was born in Sofia, Bulgaria, in 2017. She is currently nine years old. She has been
drawing ever since she could hold a pencil, using whatever materials she could find and drawing
on every available surface.
On 5 June 2025, her first solo exhibition opened at Gallery 88 "Kamen Popov" in Sofia. The
exhibition featured drawings created when she was four, five, six, and seven years old. The
invitation came after gallery owners Yulita Popova and Jos Celis saw her illustrations in Itzhak
Finzi's book Five Plays Retold by an Actor.
On 1 June 2026, her second solo exhibition opened at the House of Culture "Sredets" in Sofia,
home to Bulgaria's first children's art gallery. On 4 June 2026, Gallery 88 "Kamen Popov"
presented Shakespeare – Interpretation and Imagination, featuring works inspired by The
Tempest, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Romeo and Juliet, The Merchant of Venice, and King
Lear.
In July 2026, three of her drawings were selected for the fourth edition of ArteAporte's
international exhibition L'Arte Surrealista si Muove, presented in Turin from 18 to 23 July 2026.
In 2026, she also received an international award in the children's art competition Meine Welt
im Koffer ("My World in a Suitcase"). The award ceremony will take place on 10 March 2027
at the Museum Fünf Kontinente in Munich, where the winning works will be exhibited from 11
March through the summer of 2027.
In addition to illustrating Itzhak Finzi's book (published in 2025), Matilda is the author and
illustrator of her own book, Honk – a collection of humorous stories about imaginary little
characters of her own creation called the Honks.
