China, 2000

My name is Liu Qingran. I am a visual artist based in London and a graduate of the MA Textiles programme at the Royal College of Art. My practice moves fluidly between textiles and moving image, responding to the sensory experiences evoked by natural rhythms and the passage of time. Through the medium of textiles, I explore the relationships between material, memory, and the body—seeking to transform fragments of the personal and cultural into a tactile and visual language. The structural logic of the Dubied knitting machine offers me a starting point of “order,” while yarns—fragile yet persistent—are constantly shifting and reconfiguring through subtle changes in colour and texture. Much of my inspiration emerges from states of displacement, nostalgia, identity, and emotional ambiguity. I consider textiles not merely as objects, but as vessels for lived experiences, partial memories, and invisible connections. I am also interested in the overlap between image and textile—how memory can be “printed,” deconstructed, and reassembled into a space that hovers between reality and abstraction. My works aim to convey a sense of restrained yet resonant emotion, creating atmospheres suspended between clarity and blur, structure and intuition. Beyond my studio practice, I actively engage in artist residencies, workshops, and interdisciplinary collaborations. These experiences continue to expand my perspective by placing me in dialogue with diverse cultures and environments. I hope my works are not only expressions, but invitations—guiding viewers toward renewed connections with themselves, with others, and with the land we inhabit.
