Belgium, 1963

Rony Van den Block is a contemporary Belgian artist, born in 1963. His artistic talent emerged early: in 1971, he won a municipal drawing competition, underscoring his early passion for drawing and visual expression. After high school, Van den Block attended the Sint-Lukas Institute in Brussels for art education and additionally studied life drawing at the Jan Portael School in Vilvoorde. After graduating, he settled in Edegem. With experience working with both national and international clients, he built a career with his own graphic design agency. Although drawing and painting always appealed to him, Van den Block only later began to publish his art under his own name. A key moment in his artistic development occurred about 25 years ago when he purchased a building colloquially known as a “block” and began incorporating it, both literally and figuratively, into his art. This interest led to the development of his signature style. In his work, Van den Block constantly plays with the tension between figuration and abstraction, experimenting with color, material, and rhythm. The block structures, always with a clear space between them, give his paintings and drawings a unique visual language that is both playful and thoughtful. His works invite different perspectives: up close, you recognize individual elements and details, while from a distance, a larger composition unfolds. Besides aesthetics, many of Van den Block’s works also contain social observations and criticism. He references themes such as social media, cultural stereotypes, and historical migration patterns, often with an ironic or critical undertone, but always presented with vibrant colors and attractive forms. His artistic career accelerated in 2021, with solo exhibitions, participation in numerous group exhibitions in Belgium and internationally, and other renowned art fairs and exhibitions. Van den Block’s work can be found in galleries and private collections, and he continues to exhibit actively both domestically and internationally. His style, often described as a blend of classical painting with a modern digital aesthetic, reflects a personal vision of our contemporary world and demonstrates a deep engagement with both form and meaning.
