A painter, Timothy deVries (b. 1977) is best known for his flat, bold style and unique visual language. Made of latex house paint and acrylics on canvas, Timothy’s paintings feature innovative compositions and expressive colour and picture elements. His works are acclaimed for their impactful artistry, making dream-like allusions to imaginative spaces, actions, and objects.
Timothy’s past work often features scenes set in simply constructed spaces. Corners are defined by colour planes, establishing partitions that bring focus to the play between surface and depth. A series created over many years features construction cones – traffic pylons – in various contexts, raising questions about the symbolism of colour and shape. Currently Timothy is fusing the personal and the public in a collection of painted portraits.
Beginning in 2009, Timothy participated in an art collective (Thou Art Party) that hosted monthly parties for visitors attending the popular James Street Art Crawl in Hamilton. Following that, Timothy became a member of Hamilton Artists Inc., and participated in his first professional group show there in 2015. Since then, Timothy has shown his art at the Hamilton Audio-Visual Node, McMaster Innovation Centre, and Hamilton Public Library. In May 2023, Timothy partnered with Millworks Creative on a self-presented solo show of recent work, an event which coincided with the launch of his Instagram profile and website.
