Bulgaria, 1994

Dr. Velichko Rakleov (b. 1994) is a distinguished Bulgarian contemporary painter, graphic artist, and graduated art scholar who holds a PhD (2025), Master’s (2018), and Bachelor’s degree (2016) in Painting from the National Academy of Arts (NAA) in Sofia. Seamlessly bridging rigorous academic traditions with profound psychological expression, Rakleov’s artistic path is marked by early institutional and international acclaim. He is a prominent laureate of the National Academic Drawing Competition (2013), won 1st Place in the ADCOM Digital Drawing Competition (2013), and received a prestigious Award and Diploma from the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Bulgaria (2012) for high artistic achievements, which included an official reception at the Presidency. His extensive exhibition record spans over a decade of prominent national and international showcases. In the realm of printmaking and drawing, he was awarded the Gold Medal at the 18th International Youth Graphic Biennale in Toruń, Poland (2012), and achieved high-tier selections at the 2nd Guangzhou International Exlibris and Mini-prints Biennale in China (2012) and the 7th Fu Xian Zhai International Exlibris Competition in Shanghai (2013). His work has been exhibited at cultural hubs across Europe, including the Polish Cultural Institute in Sofia, the Bulgarian Cultural Institute in Warsaw, and the Art School in Niš, Serbia. He has been a consistent participant in prominent academic forums, including the National Student Festival of Arts at SWU "Neofit Rilski" (2013), the XII Academic Drawing Competition at NAA (Honorable Mention, 2014), the "Contemporary Visual Culture" exhibition at Banka Art Center (2020), and the "Portrait of Vasil Levski" national contest (2022). His graduation works as both Bachelor and Master of Fine Arts were prominently showcased at the prestigious "Shipka 6" Gallery of the Union of Bulgarian Artists (2018, 2020). A defining pillar of Rakleov’s recent creative evolution is a deep-seated cross-cultural dialogue with Italy, which originated with his selection at the 6th "Enchanted Wood" International Contest in Piedmont (2012). This connection was later profoundly revitalized by an artistic muse of Italian origin. This pivotal encounter inspired an immersive study of the Italian language and cultural nuances, transforming a lived emotional reality into a series of masterfully executed watercolor portraits. His exquisite command of the medium has garnered contemporary global recognition, marked a successful high-tier pre-selection at the International Watercolor Academy Award 2026 and the Watercolor Golden Brush 2026 final exhibition. Balancing scholarly precision with poetic, evocative narratives, his current painterly inquiry explores the structural transparency of natural light and human psychology.
