How much of our choice remains truly our own when we are surrounded by ready-made answers? Society continually produces images, behavioral models, and ideas of what is desirable. Through repetition and familiarity, they enter our personal decisions almost unnoticed. The boundary between our own desire and an adopted script becomes increasingly fragile.
In this work, the desire to conform to a particular image takes on a subtle irony. It becomes a kind of game in which imitation can be voluntary, absurd, and deeply human at once. Someone else’s choice, a collective trend, or a popular image can become a point of reference before we have asked how closely it relates to us.
Yet even when we look outside ourselves for an answer, we are rarely neutral about what it should be. The question already carries an expectation. Among “yes,” “no,” and “maybe,” one answer often exerts a stronger pull. The search for a decision becomes a search for confirmation: a desire to hear what we are already inclined to believe.
The painting leaves the boundary between external influence and personal choice unresolved. How freely do we choose what we want? And when we turn to the outside world for an answer, are we open to what it might reveal—or hoping it will confirm what we already want to hear?
