She Was Left with Only Her Memories

"She Was Left with Only Her Memories" grew from my fascination with memories that are not entirely our own - stories inherited through history, photographs, books, and the lives of those who came before us. I am too young to remember World War II, yet its images and atrocities have remained part of my consciousness since childhood. In the painting, fragments of memory, history, and imagination occupy the same space. Figures from different moments live together as they often do in memory, where time has little regard for chronology. I don't try to resolve the story. Like in so many of my paintings, I leave it to the viewer to discover their own interpretation of the painting's narrative.
