France, 1970

Beatrice Morel (b.1970, France) is a self-taught artist, whose diverse portfolio spans oil and acrylic painting, photography, sculpture, pottery, installations and Ikebana, having graduated from Sogetsu School of Tokyo in 2011. Living abroad for 30 years across France, USA, India, Belgium, Ireland, Japan, Greece, South Korea and Singapore, her experience deeply influences her exploration of cross-cultural blending and global perspectives with diverse audiences. Based between France and Singapore, she currently focuses on photography and, as with her painting, her photographic practice takes the road of abstraction. Her latest project began as an effort to express the light, movement, and colours of emotions. Trying to create an archive of her personal experiences, Beatrice Morel seeks to externalise her inner thoughts without rationalising or minimising them. This process served as a form of catharsis, helping her confront grief and anxiety by transforming emotions often left unexpressed into visual form. Beatrice Morel's work pushes the boundaries of traditional photography, blurring the lines between light and materiality. She reimagines the camera as a paintbrush and uses a technique combining a low ISO setting, slow shutter speed, and deliberate camera shake. Beatrice Morel’s exploration extends beyond the capture of light to the very surfaces on which she prints her images, such as mirror-like surfaces, which incorporate the viewer into the artwork itself, blurring the boundaries between observer and observed. Created entirely in-camera—without cropping, photoshopping, or AI manipulation—they stand in direct opposition to current trends of digital constructed perfection. Her work has been exhibited internationally, notably in India, France and Singapore, showcasing her unique approach to photography. Beyond her artistic pursuits, Beatrice Morel is also an independent curator, leveraging her MA in Museum Studies and Curatorial Practices from Nanyang Technology University (Singapore). She co-founded the Of Limits Collective, a Curators and Artists Collective dedicated to exploring diverse perspectives in discussing various subjects – from socio-political pulses and tensions to interactions and the creative synergy between communities.
