Portugal, 2000

Iara Magalhães was born in 2000 in Porto, Portugal, where she presently resides. She is a graduate of the Bachelor in Fine Arts with a specialization in Painting in the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Porto. In 2018, she did the course “Arte e Pensamento” (Art and Thought) in Biblioteca Almeida Garrett with Professor Sousa Dias. In 2019, she participated in the group exhibition Int_Ext- O Desenho da FBAUP-Projeto de Intervenção nos Jardins do SMAS and on the Workshop of microscopical drawing in the Institute of Biomedical Sciences Abel Salazar. In 2021, she participated in the group exhibition Mostra Trilhar in Braga, in Bienal Jovem Jov`arte in Loures and in the group exhibition Cadenza, organized by Projeto S1SMO in Ordem dos Médicos in Porto. In 2022, she was part of the Project “Video Dreams #1”- Práticas dos Imaginários, a group video screening in FBAUP, the Painting performance of Porto Cello Festival in Museu Soares dos Reis and the final exhibition of the painting graduates “Por baixo da mesa” in FBAUP`s museum, in the exhibition "EM ALTA VOZ" in Lionesa Business Hub in Leça do Balio and in the exhibition "Imagens em confluência" in Galeria Olivia Reis in Espinho. In that year, she also did her first solo exhibition "Anódino" (Harmless) in Ordem dos Médicos, in Porto. In 2023, she participated in the group exhibition of Mosaic in the Archeology Museum of Braga and did a solo exhibition "Swallow" in Fábrica de Santo Tirso. In 2024, she participated in the group exhibition "Synesthesia II" in the Gallery of Ordem dos Médicos and in 2025 she curated the group exhibition "Synesthesia III" in the Gallery of Ordem dos Médicos in Porto.    Beyond her path in fine arts, she is also a jazz vocalist and composer born in Porto, Portugal. She began her path in Porto in Academia de Música Valentim de Carvalho, where she studied voice and harp. In 2019, she was selected as one of the performers for the Abingdon Summer School for solo singers in England, in which she studied with Professors such as Christine Cairns and Margaret Humphrey Clark. In 2022, she was awarded a merit-based scholarship to attend Berklee College of Music, in the United States. In 2024, she was selected as a member of the Institute of Jazz and Gender Justice at Berklee, which gave her the opportunity to study with artists such as Farayi Malek. In the same year, she represented Portugal in the 38th International Folk Festival in Boston. In 2025, she was awarded the Division Achievement Award by the Voice Department in Berklee College of Music. In the same year, she graduated Suma Cum Laude from Berklee College of Music with a Bachelors of Music in Professional Music.    Her Jazz compositions are the starting point of her paintings. Her project is called "Chromesthesia" and it is a series of works that blend Jazz and Colour.
