Laurence O’Toole is an Irish realist painter working in oil and acrylic, whose narrative practice combines figurative imagery and elements of the natural world with a subtle surrealist sensibility. His work explores contemporary social, environmental, and moral conditions through constructed visual narratives. A self-taught artist, O’Toole has exhibited widely in Ireland and internationally, including at the Royal Hibernian Academy, Royal Ulster Academy, and Royal Scottish Academy. He is a recipient of two awards from the Royal Ulster Academy. His work is held in public and private collections, including the OPW, and in collections of financial and state institutions. Following extensive travel and residencies in Japan, New Zealand, Australia, Spain, and France, he is now based in Kilkenny. His current practice focuses on developing triptych and multi-panel works as expanded narrative forms.
