“To me, art is simply a little kindness, offered quietly.” Penpylon (Seung Hwa Pyeon) is a pen-drawing artist based in Busan, South Korea. Working exclusively with black ink on paper, she builds intricate narratives through the patient and continuous layering of dots and lines. What begins as a single mark gradually expands into dense textures, rhythmic movement, and entire imagined worlds. Her practice centers on the images and beings that naturally emerge through this process—whimsical wanderers, organic forms, celestial landscapes, and quiet spaces that exist just beyond the familiar world. Working without color, she explores the infinite depth of black, using density and rhythm to create space, atmosphere, and movement on paper. Built through an immense amount of meticulous labor, her worlds remain lighthearted and open. The beings within them are free to wander, rest, play, or simply exist in their own gentle rhythm. Through these small imagined lives, she quietly offers viewers a moment of warmth, curiosity, and a quiet smile. Her work has been showcased in solo and group exhibitions across South Korea and Japan, as well as at international art fairs and exhibitions in Singapore, Taiwan, and Europe.
